Wat Sri Sunthon and the Sleeping Buddha
Wat Sri Sunthon, also known as Wat Lipon, is a Buddhist temple in Thalang about 14.5 kilometers north of Phuket Town. The first thing visitors see is the 29 meter high Sleeping Buddha sculpture crowning the temple's central building, along with 9 smaller Buddha images in different positions, all facing the entrance as if welcoming worshippers.
Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha
Wat Chalong, officially Wat Chaiyathararam, was built at the beginning of the 19th century and is the largest and most visited of Phuket's temples. The Big Buddha is one of the island's most important and revered landmarks: the huge statue sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata and, at 45 meters tall, can be seen from as far away as Phuket Town and Karon Beach.
A Bonus: Phuket Views Restaurant
The plan was four temples, but the family made a mistake and could not find one of them. The miss turned into a win when they found the Phuket Views Restaurant, which Dave calls pretty amazing. Temple hopping in Phuket pairs naturally with scenic dining, and this detour is a happy example.
